The Crown of the Risen Christ 2018

Client: Jane Aagaard, Christchurch Anglican Cathedral, Darwin

During a visit to Darwin, I was asked by my friend Jane Aagaard to produce an artpiece in glass for Christchurch Anglican Cathedral, a project which also had the practical purpose of preventing prayer candles from being blown out by the huge ceiling fans in the church. She further specified that the burning candles should be visible to worshippers in the body of the church. My response was a glass enclosure made predominately of fused clear glass, in segments which were supported in a stainless steel frame made by by local artist Gary Cornelious. The piece has been called ‘The Crown of the Risen Christ’ and had led to a vastly increased use of candles as an aspect of worship at the church.
