Shrine to the Original St Peter’s Church 2018

Client: Whittlesea- Kinglake Anglican Parish

I have continued my work in providing the new Anglican church of St Peter’s with the art needed to tell its stories. I was asked to design a shrine for the new church which commemorated both the original church, which was burnt down in the Black Saturday bushfires, and the 13 WW1 war dead in whose memory the old church had been erected. The shrine incorporates a replica of the painting ‘Anzac Christmas’ by Violet Teage, along with a glass enclosed cabinet which holds relics from the old church which were rescued after the fires, including a frieze of partly burnt prayer book pages. Replicas of the brass commemorative plaques for the soldiers and their pictures will also be added later. The shrine is placed so that poppy images from the north windows of the church are projected by the sun onto the shrine on the morning of Anzac Day each year.
